Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper critically reflects on the progress Malawi has made in the implementation of the Malawi Country Mining Vision (MALCMV) – a localised version of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV). It examines approaches and experiences in the AMV domestication process and further reflects on the economic potential for mining-led development in Malawi. Findings indicate that there has been a lag in the domestication process and the little progress made thus has largely been due to adhoc and piecemeal approaches taken to implement other mining sector initiatives. While there is great potential for mining to catalyse inclusive development in Malawi, for this to come to fruition, the government would need to take a far more proactive approach to fully and systematically implementing the MALCMV.
