Abstract

In Algeria, no long - or even short - term records of domestic water consumption exist that could serve as empirical basis for the prediction of water demand. Several official documents propose values for water demand. These values all differ from one another, sometimes considerably. Thus, most hydraulic studies on the local level are still based on a customary value of 150 l/cap/d. This article gives an overview of the available information on domestic water consumption and presents a study to determine water consumption in the city of Beni Abbes, which presents typical characteristics of water supply in Algeria: limited resources, deficient management and intermittent supply conditions. Water consumption was determined at 80 litres a person a day for the period October 2010 to May 2011. The collected data also allowed the construction of weekly and daily consumption patterns that were compared to typical consumption patterns under continuous supply conditions.
