Abstract

AbstractThe analysis of archival documents related to the static restoration of the abacus of Marcus Aurelius Column and the reading of the description of the operations performed to move the Vatican Obelisk allow illustrating the mastery that Domenico Fontana exhibits about the statics of elementary machines – deriving from the knowledge of the technical literature of the second half of the sixteenth century – and his ability to exploit it as a support in the phase of structural invention.
