Abstract

Most of ICAI (Intelligent Computer Aided Instruction) systems for the natural sciences have each model of the domain world written in symbolic knowledge representation. In such symbolic models, the ways to represent objects in the domain worlds are decided on the basis of the designers' standpoints or viewpoints (what to omit in the models, what to make the primitive elements of the models, and so on). In this paper, we show that the world model of ICAI systems for many domains should be represented from variable viewpoints. Moreover we propose some methods to design and to handle the world model which can be represented from variable viewpoints, in the domain of the high-school chemistry. We show a basic viewpoint and three advanced viewpoints which are needed to solve 176 numerical exercises in a textbook of the domain. And we also report on our problem solving system with the world model.
