Abstract

Based on the traditional indirect method of digital orthophoto map (DOM) generation, a method of DOM generation from aerial images based on airborne position and orientation system (POS) is proposed. First, digital elevation model (DEM) of local area is produced through dense point image matching of aerial images and multi-image intersection by POS data. Second, with the elevation interpolated using XY coordinates in DOM, the image point coordinates are calculated in original images using POS data and translated to scanned coordinates for digital images. At last, gray value interpolation and assignment are carried out to generate DOM. The results are tested using two sets of actual aerial images and the empirical results indicate that it is feasible to produce DOM using POS data. This method has the characteristics of high efficiency and short cycle for mapping. It suits to the needs of emergency response mapping particularly and provides a new way to acquire and update fundamental geographic information quickly.
