Abstract
AbstractThe road serving Zion Canyon - the scenic heart of Zion National Park - was often congested, and parking lots overflowed (Impacts to roads/parking; Impacts to attraction sites; Crowding; Conflict). This made the Canyon noisy (Impacts to soundscape), and unauthorized parking along the road resulted in substantive degradation of soil and vegetation (Impacts to soil; Impacts to vegetation). Park wildlife were sometimes injured or killed while crossing the road (Impacts to wildlife). And the presence of so many vehicles contributed to air pollution (Impacts to air). A mandatory (Rules/Regulations) shuttle bus system (Facility development/Site design/Maintenance) was initiated for Zion Canyon (Spatial zoning) for the peak use season (Temporal zoning). These management practices were designed to Reduce the impact of use and Harden park resources.
