Abstract

This chapter examines the rise of Hong Kong as a centre of the global contemporary art world. This development advanced significantly when Art Basel (based in Switzerland) took over the Hong Kong Art Fair and produced its first ‘edition’ of Art Basel Hong Kong in 2013. Although this move in some ways confirmed the existing importance of the territory within global capitalism – and as a centre of communications and culture within Asia – the arrival of the brand of ‘Art Basel’ was transformational, attracting more and more international businesses and dealing galleries to the city. While Hong Kong has become further entrenched as a business centre for buying and selling contemporary art across ‘global Asia’ and beyond, the territory’s relationship to China – and the impact of this on the city’s art scene and its international status – is now fraught with potentially destabilizing pressures and competing interests.
