Abstract

For anyone who has a genuine interest in improving patient care-and for anyone who has read Robert Francis' report on the long-term failings at Mid Staffs-comments like this, which I heard yesterday from a friend, should send shivers down the spine. The long-anticipated ‘funding gap’ in the NHS has arrived-whether through the slow strangulation of the private finance initiative PFI or simple budgetary tightening. Spending plans are making no sense to thepeople treating patients. And the good people are leaving.
