Abstract

Unanesthetized dogs and sheep were subjected to gradual severe corrected blood loss using the hydrostatic bottle technique. Although cardiorespiratory response to blood loss was different in the two species, and reinfusion of the shed blood restored the circulation in both groups, all animals eventually relapsed into hypotension and died of “irreversible” normovolemic shock. Implications of these findings are briefly discussed.
