Abstract
Abstract Bateson's application of Russell's theory of logical types to the analysis of communications in general and to the double bind theory in particular is closely examined. The class/member distinction and the hierarchy of logical types, when carefully applied, are useful tenets for understanding processes of communication. Attention is paid to common misapplications of logical typing and errors of logical typing. The double bind is shown to be a prominent case mistakenly based on the concept of an error of logical typing, and it is proposed that the double bind may be more accurately described as based on the concept of an error of classification.
