Abstract

Purpose/Objective: In recent years, there has been controversy over the impact that the number of axillary lymph nodes removed has on the outcome of node negative breast cancer patients. Some reports have indicated that a more extensive dissection has a beneficial effect on survival. This may raise some concern when limited numbers of axillary nodes are removed as part of sentinel lymph node dissection. Other reports have shown no difference or worse outcome with increasing number of lymph nodes removed. Therefore, we undertook this analysis to determine the effect that the number of negative axillary lymph nodes removed had on the survival of node negative breast cancer patients.
