Abstract

Abstract The introduction to this article provides an overview of three plays in the Nuyorican Gothic cycle, by multi-hyphenate theater artist Desi Moreno-Penson, which have been produced over the past two decades. The interview portion features a conversation between dramaturg A. J. Muhammad and Moreno-Penson about the third play in the cycle, Ominous Men (2016), which is about a group of Latino and Black men who gather in the basement of a haunted building in the Bronx to play a game of dominoes on the night of the infamous 1977 New York City blackout. Moreno-Penson elaborates on the play's many themes, the origins and aesthetics of her play cycle, and how she deploys the Gothic in her work.
