Abstract

Introduction: Tensor fascia latae (TFL) and the iliotibial band (ITB) are implicated in common hip and knee musculoskeletal conditions, and static stretching (SS) of these structures is a frequently implemented treatment during rehabilitation. Despite this, limited knowledge persists around the physiological mechanisms behind SS and its impact. Shear wave ultrasound elastography (SWE) allows quantification of mechanical and elastic properties of musculoskeletal tissues. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a short- and long-term bout of SS of the TFL and ITB on muscle stiffness and resultant hip range of motion (ROM).
