Abstract

Background: For any unknown lesion or condition of the oral mucosa, a biopsy provides the simplest and most rapid means of obtaining the definitive diagnosis. An adequate and appropriate tissue sample is critical when obtaining a biopsy. A mucosal biopsy should be of adequate depth to include the entire layer of epithelium and a portion of the underlying connective tissue.
