Research Highlights • The study sought to examine the association between retirement and health behaviors in South Korea • Study adopted stress theory framework to assess the relationship between retirement and health behavior of Korean young elderly, specifically. • Gender differences were noted in the relationship between retirement and health behaviors. • Retired men were less likely to engage in heavy smoking or drinking than employed men • Retired men and women were more likely to engage in physical activity than employed individuals • Retired women were more likely to be overweight than employed women
