Abstract

There are many new technologies that can technically demonstrate how voice, video and data can be carried on the same network, whether it be the PSTN or a cable HFC (hybrid fibre coax) network. However the commercial viability of video on PSTN, or telephony on HFC has still to be proven. (The same could be said for data on wireless networks.) However in terms of fibre networks, the cable TV operators now have the edge, with fibre deployed in the local loop to serve typically 500 homes per node. This paper explains where HFC fits, the services available today and how the architecture can evolve to provide for new and enhanced services.
