Abstract
It takes courage to interrupt a sermon in full flight. This was not a quality that Jenny Geddes lacked when, in 1637, she flung her stool at the dean of St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh screaming “Daur ye say mass in my lug,” as he attempted to read from the English Book of Common Prayer. The good lady went on to make a decent living by selling cabbages outside the cathedral door. More recently, and probably a good deal more politely, a doctor and a community worker in Swaziland courgeously interrupted the sermon of a local parish priest.
