Abstract

Evidence-Based Answer In patients with beta thalassemia major, folic acid supplementation for 1 month does not increase hemoglobin levels or change transfusion intervals. In children with beta thalassemia minor, however, folate supplementation for 3 months appears to increase hemoglobin levels and decrease symptoms of bone pain and myalgia and improve some measures of fatigue (SOR: B, RCT and cohort study).
