Abstract
Timing of palate repair is controversial because it has opposing influence on speech and maxillary growth: early repair benefits speech development while adversely affecting maxillary growth while delayed repair has the exactly opposite effect. Opinions on these issues seem to differ and the controversy continues. A systematic review of the available evidence was undertaken in an attempt to throw light on the subject. The clinical question was ‘Does delayed cleft palate repair affect speech development?’ An electronic literature survey was carried out in MEDLINE-PubMed, Ovid, Embase, and Cochrane Library, using the ‘Keywords cleft palate repair, hard palate repair timing, speech’.
