Abstract

MRSA is a significant cause of HAI and impacts the patients' morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. The increased cost associated with an HAI has been documented. An analysis of 55 studies determined that a MRSA HAI cost $35,367. In New Jersey, legislation mandated hospitals to perform active surveillance culture (ASC) for MRSA in an intervention unit. A facility risk assessment determined the intervention unit to be a twelve bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU). The objective of this study is to compare the cost and incidence of healthcare associated (HA) MRSA between two intensive care units over 30 months.
