Abstract

Menetrier disease of childhood is a rare disease of unknown etiology, although it was described an association with Cytomegalovirus infection in about one third of the cases. The typical clinical and laboratorial changes are edema and hypoproteinemia with hypoalbuminemia. A previously healthy 22-months-old boy was admitted for generalized edema, with hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. The performed study revealed an evidence of acute Cytome ga lovirus infection. Endoscopy suggested hypertrophic gastritis and histology showed foveolar hyperplasia and inflammatory cellular infiltration. When the renal and hepatic causes of hypoalbuminemia are excluded, others aetiologies must be investigated. In this context, the identification of a Cytome ga lovirus infection leads the investigation to Menetrier’s disease of childhood.
