Abstract

The Department of Energy's budget request for fiscal year 1993 is $19,4 billion, a 2% increase from last year's total. The biggest increase was in environmental restoration, up 24% to $5.3 billion. A total of $3.0 billion is proposed for basic science research, an increase of 12% from fiscal 1992.Budget cuts were proposed for national defense and energy‐related activities. Due to a shrinking and restructuring of nuclear weapons, national defense activities were decreased by 9%. Also, energy‐related activities, including increasing energy efficiency and securing future energy supplies, would decrease by 2%, which reflects a decrease in fossil fuel R&D funding.
