Abstract

SUMMARY In January of 2006, Indiana University Libraries launched a free document delivery service on its Bloomington campus. A fee-based service for faculty was in existence until December of 2005, but billing problems and lack of use caused the library to re-think this service. The library wanted to expand the service to make the libraries' resources more useful to all users on campus, but also wanted to eliminate billing problems that had become the standard in the fee-based service. Also, the process needed to be streamlined and become more integrated into the regular interlibrary loan workflow. The entire document delivery service was reviewed and many changes were made. The revamped service, Request Article Delivery, became a free article delivery service implemented through ILLiad and offered to the more than 45,000 students, faculty, and staff affiliated with the Bloomington campus. The service has proven to be a popular one with over 12,000 requests submitted in 2006. This article will discuss implementation, advertising, policies, procedures, and associated costs regarding this service.
