Abstract
Doctors in the United States who treat patients with pulmonary tuberculosis are being recommended to use powered air respirators - described in JAMA (1993;270:1903) as more at home in coal mines than hospitals and already nicknamed “Darth Vader” masks by those expected to use them. The masks are only one part of a comprehensive set of protective measures drawn up by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, modified by revisions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
