Abstract

John Singer Sargent painted Dr Pozzi at Home in 1881. Pozzi is red on red: wearing a full length red gown and standing before a red, velvety backdrop. The long fingers of one hand are bound in a tie just below the collar. His other hand sits on his hip, a little provocative, two fingers threatening to pluck off the waist cord altogether. One decorated shoe peeps from underneath. His eyes are drawn off centre. Pozzi's neatly trimmed beard and quiffed hair suggest a familiarity with his reflection. This is The Man in the Red Coat.
