Doctor Gilbert's first descriptions of Hart describe him as possessing: ‘Unusually high grade of intelligence, alert, ambitious and, all in all, decidedly of the higher grade of humanity, when judged by the customary standards’ (Katz 1976 [1992], 258). Doctor Gilbert struggles with what he considers as ‘treason to the underlying principles of psychotherapy’ (1976 [1992], 275) and admits to ‘long hesitancy and deliberation’ before deciding that hysterectomy presented ‘the only rational course’ (1976 [1992], 276). 3. ‘Homosexuality and its Treatment’ was originally published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease in October 1920 Gilbert , J.
