Abstract

Critical theories are a superb way to begin to analyze and understand the world in which one lives. Marxist theory and Cultural Studies are two such means of looking at the world. With respect to the former, a single definition among the plethora of books dedicated to explaining and analyzing Marxist theory will suffice: “In Classic Marxism, the economic base (i.e., the relations of production, or who owns things and how they are produced) determine ‘in the final instance’ the character of politics and the whole realm of culture.” Regarding the latter, John Storey notes popular music’s importance in society with respect to cultural and economic significance has brought it to the fore as a field of study within the realm of Cultural Studies. This field often incorporates Marxist theory, particularly the idea of a revolution by the subordinate masses. According to Keith Tester, Cultural Studies urges people “to study living cultural practices, the lived realities of oppression.” A Marxist perspective is evident in the focus of Cultural Studies on popular music, for, according to Storey:
