Abstract

This study of objective measurement of smoking behaviour reports the findings from asample of 300 adolescents aged 11–16 years from Nottingham. Saliva thiocyanate determination did not prove satisfactory in the validation of self-reported smoking, probably due to lack of sensitivity at the low levels of cigarette consumption recorded in this age group. Prior knowledge of the saliva test did not affect the level of self-reported smoking significantly. It is considered that adolescents report “truthfully” about their own smoking when anonymous questionnaires are used.
