Abstract

This article reviews some recent key writings on the theology of the Scripture from Protestant and Roman Catholic perspectives, particularly the works of Barth, Schneiders, Hauerwas, Childs, and Kelly. The time is ripe for a dialogue in which each side is willing to acknowledge and learn from that which is life-giving in the convictions of the other. One of the main purposes of this article is to argue, following Barth, that the notion of “witness” provides one of the essential keys to an adequate theology of the scriptures.
