Abstract

Isotopic labelling ( 13C) of all six double-bonded carbon atoms in bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF or ET), which results in large shifts (56–67 cm −1) in the frequencies of intramolecular a g modes at ∼ 1500 cm −1, is found to lead to no measurable isotope effect on T c in the high- T c ambient pressure organic superconductors ϰ-(ET) 2Cu(NCS) 2 ( T c=10.4 K) and κ-(ET) 2Cu[N(CN) 2]Br ( T c=11.6 K). Thus, the intramolecular CC stretching vibrational modes in ET at energies near 1500 cm −1 are not dominant mediators of superconducting pairing in these molecular superconductors.
