Abstract

In order to focus on the effectiveness of surface columnar defects ( SCDs) in bulk materials we have analyzed the magnetic properties of melt-textured YBa 2Cu 3O 7−δ samples, irradiated on opposite sides by means of 2 GeV gold ions. The irradiation affects 10% of the whole volume. Two different hypotheses are presented and discussed to explain the quite large effectiveness of the SCDs in modifying the sample superconducting properties.
