Abstract
Short Messaging System (SMS) and similar technologies restrict the amount of text that can be utilized in communication. The present study aimed to investigate how the restricting aspects of such technologies affect the time used to reproduce a message, and the mental processing of the content of that message. The results show no differences in time spent writing. However, a reaction time task indicates that participants with restricted text space, compared to non-restricted participants, have a wider range of story-related concepts readily available in working memory. Areas of future research are outlined.
