Abstract

ABSTRACT This study mainly aims to understand whether the increasing adoption of industrial robots has spurred the strengthening of labour lawsuits. Based on city-level data in China during the period of 2007 to 2019, our analysis reveals a significant relationship between industrial robot shocks and the increase of labour lawsuits. The underlying mechanism is that labour are replaced by robots, especially in manufacturing industries. Firms will dismissal employees, reduce wages or insurances to save labour costs, thus resulting in more labour lawsuits.
