Abstract

A QUESTIONNAIRE has been used to test the knowl edge of alcohol equivalences of drinks, their unit content, their alcohol by volume percentage, and the low risk consumption levels expressed both in units and in drink measures. The questionnaire was answered by trainee nurses (a knowledgeable group), and general medical outpatients (a less knowledgeable group). The results show that a pro portion of those who 'know units' cannot use them to work out drink equivalents. This finding emphasises the need to ensure that people not only know the unit content of drinks but understand how to use this information to make informed choices about drink ing. There is also a group who apparently understand drink equivalents but not the unit system.
