Abstract
The energies of simple many-body systems are calculated with the lowest-order Brueckner theory and with the lowest order constrained variational method, and the results are compared with accurate variational upper bounds. The comparison suggests that the lowest-order methods can have errors of the order of the dispersion correction (∼ 12 MeV in nuclear matter), and hence are not accurate enough to study nuclear matter.
