Do extensive air shower data provide reliable information on the proton-proton total cross section?

Abstract

The zenith angle dependence of frequencies of extensive air showers is discussed from the point of view of nucleon-nucleon total cross sections. It is shown that this kind of data cannot (without additional assumptions) distinguish between asymptotically constant cross sections and those increasing as In s or even as (In s)2.
