Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper investigated the influence of geopolitical risk (GPR) on national food availability and distinguished the differentiated effects caused by geopolitical shocks at domestic and international food suppliers. We proposed an external geopolitical risk index (EGPR) to identify a country’s vulnerability to geopolitical turmoil in its food suppliers. Our findings show that country-specific GPR adversely affects domestic production, and EGPR reduces food imports. Furthermore, the food availability of countries with low GDP is more easily susceptible to geopolitical unrest. Overall, this paper offers helpful hints for policymakers worldwide regarding the prevention of food security risks triggered by geopolitical tensions.
