Abstract

The levels of DNA, RNA and protein were determined at different stages throughout microcycle conidiation in Aspergillus niger van Tiegh. The period of maximum accumulation of these cellular components occurred during spore growth rather than the period of conidiophore outgrowth. Pulse labelling studies also indicate that this was also the period of maximum protein and RNA biosynthesis. Techniques have been developed for the isolation of polyribosomes and RNA fractions from giant spores. Using these techniques, incorporation studies have been carried out which indicate that rRNA, tRNA and mRNA were being synthesized during the period of maximum RNA biosynthesis.
