Abstract
A novel porphyrin ruthenium mixed complex, [MPyTPP—Ru(pip)2Cl]+, has been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, ES-MS, u.v.–vis. and electrochemistry. The DNA binding properties of this complex have been investigated by absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and by viscosity measurements. The results indicate that the complex may bind with DNA in a groove-binding mode. Upon irradiation with u.v. light, this complex has been found to promote cleavage of plasmid pBR 322 DNA from the supercoiled form I to the open circular form II.
