Abstract
We show that diffuse LEED intensities (DLEED) created by disordered adsorption on a crystalline substrate can be measured as function of energy for fixed K ∥∥ as usual in conventional LEED. For O/Ni(100) these D I( E) spectra more or less coincide with I( E) spectra of the ordered phases for the same coverage. This proves that long range order is largely unimportant, i.e. LEED and DLEED are local probes for surface structure. It also shows that evaluation of DLEED data can proceed along the same lines as in conventional LEED, i.e. by fitting experimental and calculated intensity versus energy spectra.
