Abstract

Since the wireless channel is a band-limited one with multipath fading and highly burst errors, flexible error control is needed in data link control (DLC) protocol of wireless ATM networks. To support multimedia applications, two DLC strategies based on rate-compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes are proposed. One is a forward error correction (FEC) strategy, which applies RCPT codes to realize two protection levels for header and payload of wireless ATM cells. Its cell loss rate (CLR) is analyzed and found to be better than existing FEC schemes with about the same bandwidth increase. On a basis of the FEC strategy, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) strategy is proposed to improve the throughput efficiency in wireless ATM networks.
