Abstract

Sambucus racemosa L. and Sambucus nigra L. are declared being introduced in Lithuania and well accustomed there. The article discusses the question whether elder species have been introduced. Descriptions of elder appear in reports about Lithuania and East Prussia from the beginning of the 16 th century. The first Lithuanian dictionaries from the 17 th century include elder as well. These data do not allow to specify the exact species of the genus Sambucus . Reports note that elder has been an important and worshipped tree in Pagan belief. This makes it probable to suppose elder being a well known plant. Palynological data from different sites in Lithuania give evidence for pollen of Sambucus spp. in periods around 5000 14 C BP. The oldest sediments with the pollen grains of this tree were dated back to about 9300 14 C BP. Transport of pollen by wind is considered for these findings. The analysis of pollen grains do not allow the determination of the Sambucus species.
