Abstract

Subject Outlook for the Brazilian centre-right. Significance With the centre-left blamed by many sectors for one of the deepest and longest recessions in Brazilian history and unable to renew itself after its main figures have been engulfed in corruption scandals, next year’s presidential election should be the centre-right’s to lose. However, that political sector is also submerged in confusion, with several of its main figures in prison or facing corruption charges and a handful of politicians vying to lead the camp into the polls. Impacts A highly fragmented vote is likely after a potentially bitter campaign. An inconclusive outcome will undermine the chances of addressing the governance problems at the root of corruption scandals. Further corruption allegations may yet knock other presidential hopefuls out of the race.
