Abstract
There are now over 5 million sport divers in the United States alone. As the ability to travel increases, more and more of the injuries related to diving and other water sports are seeking the treatment of otolaryngologists throughout the country. The most common forms of injury are related to barotrauma, and are not life-threatening. But many of the injuries can result in permanent disability if not properly recognized and treated expeditiously. The injuries fall into the broad categories of barotrauma and decompression sickness. The otolaryngologist will encounter more and more diving-related injuries and must understand the mechanism of injury in order to make a final assessment. This review will provide a background and foundation for proper treatment of these disease processes.
