Abstract

Khijadiya is a wetland having two different types of vegetation, i.e. hydrophytes growing in/around fresh water ponds and halophytes growing in/near intertidal mud flats. A study was conducted on the diversity and community composition of hydrophytes and halophytes in Khijadiya wetland. A total of 12 hydrophytes and 10 halophytes were recorded. The freshwater area was dominated by the emergent hydrophytes like Bolboschoenus maritimus , Fimbrystylis ferruginea and Cyperus difformis whereas the saline habitat was dominated mainly by halophyte (mangrove) species like Avicennia marina . The entire wetland area was endowed with various community groups e.g. Bolboschoenus maritimus - Fimbrystylis ferruginea cyperus difformis community (a freshwater community) and Avicennia marina community (a saline water community).
