Abstract
Temporal variations in the cardiovascular system are not only a problem of chronobiological research but are of considerable practical interest to any study of cardiovascular parameters, especially in laboratory animals. The choice of suitable animal models and of well-controlled housing conditions is an inevitable prerequisite for obtaining valid results. In our studies of social influences upon heart rate we concentrated mainly on four animal species: tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri), wild European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), and guinea pigs (Cavia aperea f. porcellus). Some further heart rate data are available on laboratory mice (Mus musculus) and yellow-toothed cavies (Galea musteloides).
