Abstract

In insulin-treated alloxan diabetic rats some parameters of the hypothalamo-hypophysial-adrenocortical (HHA) system are normal: half-life and circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone, maximal and submaxirnal stimulation of the adrenal cortex by exogenous and endogenous ACTH, dex-amethasone suppression of stress stimuli of different strengths. If insulin treatment is withheld, 40 hr after the last insulin injection morning levels of plasma corticosterone are elevated, adrenocortical response to exogenous ACTH is increased, the onset of dexamethasone inhibition of weak stress signals is delayed, different stress stimuli overcome the dexamethasone blockade. These disturbances of the regulation of the HHA-system could be interpreted as counter regulation in insulin-deficient alloxan diabetic rats. (Endocrinology 95: 760, 1974)
