Abstract

This is a report of the symposium on disturbances in cellular metabolism in infancy as it relates to the enzyme system mechanism. There are short discussions by seventeen authors who have all been doing research work in these fields. The individual discussions are from two to nine pages in length. Several phases of cellular metabolism in infants are covered, such as basic enzyme mechanisms, with discussions on general considerations in activity and the development of patterns in enzyme systems during infancy. There is another section on specific defects in enzyme systems in the newborn as they effect bilirubin and glutathione metabolism in erythrocytes, the metabolism of hydrocortisone and its derivatives, and the methemoglobin reductase system. The third discussion is on the effects of membrane transport in renal tubular transport as well as on mitochondria. The last group of authors deals with such defects in the transport systems of the newborn
