Abstract
Abstract This research is connected with the Göttingen word length project (Best & Zhu, 1994) and examines the frequency of occurence of words of different lengths in complete texts. The reason for that is the assumption that words of different lengths in texts don't occur chaotically but follow stochastic laws. Word length is measured in terms of the number of syllables. The criteria of “word”; and “syllable”; are the same as in Best & Zhu (1994, p. 20): “word”; is defined as an orthographic word (Bünting & Bergenholtz, 1989, p. 36f.), and the number of syllables is defined by the number of vowels in a word.
