Abstract

The GOT and GPT transaminase content in the blood cells of healthy humans was investigated. A considerable GOT content was found in blood platelets, leucocytes and erythrocytes. The percentage distribution of GOT per ml of whole blood indicates that 80% of its activity is derived from the erythrocytes, 13% from the blood platelets, 5% from the leucocytes, and only 2%, from the serum. No glutamicpyruvic acid transaminase was found in the blood platelets and leucocytes. Erythrocytes contain small amounts of GPT, but the activity of this enzyme displays marked individual variations. The GPT and GOT content in the plasma is of the same order as in the serum. The possibility of serum transaminases being derived from the blood cells is discussed.
